For many people Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer. Pools open up and people gather around the barbecue for fun celebrations. But it is important to remember why we observe Memorial Day.
The last Monday of May is an official federal holiday honoring men and women who died while serving in the U.S Military. While it is unclear where the tradition originated the holiday now known as Memorial Day had observances dating back to the 1860s after the Civil War claimed many lives and required the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries. In the springtime various towns began to hold tributes for fallen soldiers.
Tomorrow, May 21st is Armed Forces Day. Celebrated annually on the third Saturday in May, it is a day to pay tribute to all the men and women who serve the United States’ armed forces.
The push for the day was lead by President Harry S. Truman. He unified the branches of military under a single authority and created Armed Forces Day. In February 2950 President Truman proclaimed “Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined demonstration by America’s defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, towards the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first parade of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea, and air defense.”

Incase you missed it last week we had an Earth Day giveaway at our GreenDrop locations. Three lucky winners at each site were chosen at random to win a prize raging from free water ice, Dunkin Donuts or Wawa. This was our way of thanking donors for not only helping our partner charities fund their mission but also for joining us in keeping clothing and household goods out of landfills.
We were featured in several articles as a way to donate in honor of Earth Day but of course you can donate to us any time of year. We wanted to send a special thank you to the following outlets for helping to spread awareness of the GreenDrop mission.
