After the year we’ve all had, there’s a lot to look forward to this summer. Getting outside will be at the top of most people’s priority lists. Before you go and plan out every minute of your summer, give a thought to those who can’t enjoy it quite as much. Although not as grueling as winter, summer still has its fair share of issues for less fortunate people. We’ll give you a few creative ways to give back this summer to really make it worthwhile.
Donate Your Own Produce
Summer is a great time to plant a garden outside of your house. Besides the fact that gardening is a fantastic hobby to do in the summer, you can actually use it to benefit others, as well. Growing produce for homeless shelters and food pantries can be a great way to give back to the community at very little cost to you. Contrast this with the expensive idea of donating store-bought produce, and you can see why it’s the better choice.
Clean a Public Area
Summer means more time outside, so why not make those outdoor areas more beautiful? You can either do this with an organization or all on your own. It takes nothing but a little effort on your part. It’s a great way to spend time outdoors while also helping out the community. Organizing more people to help can make the idea grow to something that really makes a difference.
Now could be the time to finally clean out that closet full of clothes. Even in the summer, clothes donations are sorely needed. Don’t assume the warmer weather means people don’t need clothing. In fact, summertime is when fewer donations come in overall, so you should make a point to donate in the summer to counteract this.
Become a Mentor
A perfect, creative way to give back this summer is to offer up your services as a mentor. We all have unique skills that could benefit others:
- Teach subjects to children before they return to school
- Coach a sports team
- Become a big brother/big sister
- Tutor summer school students
Whatever you decide to do, your skills and knowledge can be put to good use to help other people this next summer.
GreenDrop has been making substantial donations to the American Red Cross thanks to your assistance. While summer is certainly an exciting time, remember that there are always people who could use your help, no matter what the season.
