A couple of months ago, we provided our readers with tips and tricks for spring cleaning, as well as a list of GreenDrop community events where you can discard your unwanted items, have a great time, and support our partner charities.
Now, it’s probably been a few months since you last cleaned out your closet, and with back-to-school and the busy fall season coming up, it’s time for a mid-summer refresh!
Here are some simple, easy steps to help you get a jump start on making room for backpacks, lunch boxes, and new clothes for your upcoming school or work year.
Assess your closets
Before you can donate your old items or start shopping for new things, it’s important to figure out what you need and what can go.
After you’ve figured out what you need to head into fall, make that shopping list, and plan on donating the old, outgrown, and worn-out clothes that the new ones will replace.
Create a “pass down pile” from the kids’ closets
If you have more than one child in your home, start by cleaning out the closet of the oldest child. That way, you can start a pile of clothes that they no longer wear anymore, but might fit one of the other children. And don’t forget! You can still make a meaningful donation to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the National Federation of the Blind, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Philadelphia even if you’re putting the lightly worn clothes into the pass down pile. We also accept many other items besides clothing.
Make wise choices when considering what to donate
Clutter builds up when we hang onto things that we aren’t using. Maybe you think you’ll use or wear the item one day, or it has sentimental value and is hard to part with. Either way, think logically about the space you need to make for the new season, and how your old, worn out items can help others in need.
Ask yourself these questions when debating whether to keep or toss a particular item:
- Does the item still fit?
- Has it been worn in the past year?
- Is it comfortable?
- When will it most likely be worn again?
- Is it damaged?
- If you were shopping and saw the item, would you buy it again?
