The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s History

As we’ve discussed in previous posts, GreenDrop supports four separate charities—the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the American Red Cross, the National Federation of the Blind, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. We’ve discussed and explained the history and process of most of the other charities, but today we’re going to delve into the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s history and its positive impact on people around the world.

The Origins of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul

The organization began in Paris in the fall of 1831. A young law student, Frédéric Ozanam, and his fellow peers were asked to demonstrate what they were going to personally do to help the poor in Paris. Within weeks, the 20-year-old and the other students formed the first “Conference of Charity,” which was created to assist the poor. A short time after its conception, the group changed their name to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

This group of men financed their works of charity out of their own pockets and contributions from friends, and their effort produced a tremendous impact. They visited the poor, taking them into their homes and providing them with much-needed aid and assistance. These charitable acts spread quickly, and within a few years, the original group of seven students grew to 600 students, spread to over 15 other cities in France, and expanded to other countries, like the United States.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul in the States

Though the expansion of the society isn’t documented in extreme detail, it is definitely known that the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was established in the States in 1845 at the Basilica of St. Louis in Missouri. A Pennsylvania priest and a New York bishop had visited Dublin, Ireland, learned about the society, and brought this information back to the States. The men spread the story, kindness, and charity of the group and implemented their helpful strategies in their own lives. The practice expanded to other churches from there, and they strive to end poverty through systemic change and have helped countless people in the process.
